KYIV, 22 February 2026 — Ukraine faced one of the largest aerial assaults in recent weeks after Russia launched a massive overnight attack involving both missiles and drones, according to Ukrainian military officials.
Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia fired 50 missiles and 297 drones during the night. Air defense systems successfully intercepted 33 missiles and 274 drones, preventing even greater destruction.
Despite these interceptions, the scale of the attack caused significant damage, particularly to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Several regions experienced power outages, including parts of the capital, Kyiv, as strikes disrupted electricity supply.
The attack marks a sharp escalation compared to recent weeks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj previously stated that Russia had launched approximately 50 missiles over the course of an entire week. The latest assault matched that number in a single night, highlighting the intensity of the escalation.
Energy facilities have remained a frequent target throughout the war, as attacks on power infrastructure can disrupt civilian life, weaken economic activity and complicate military logistics.
Officials continue to assess the full extent of the damage, while emergency crews work to restore electricity and repair affected systems.
The overnight strikes reflect the ongoing volatility of the conflict, which has entered a prolonged phase marked by drone warfare, missile attacks and strategic targeting of infrastructure.
